Rani Singh has worked on South Asia for the whole of her career, which has mostly been with the BBC. After founding her own children’s theatre company she worked in children’s television, writing and presenting programs like Rainbow, Playschool and Watch. She was commissioned to write four books for children, two of which were for the BBC. After that she moved to television drama, playing “Sufia Karim” for three years in EastEnders in the late eighties reaching audiences of 20 million.

She then became a BBC radio producer-presenter. She originated and wrote The Ramayana series for R4, starring Shashi Kapoor. She produced The Lord, the Sword and the Guru for R4 with Mark Tully and presented documentaries like Women of Pakistan which included an exclusive interview with Benazir Bhutto. She extensively investigated with the BBC in Kashmir from both sides of the Line of Control. She has written for the Spectator and the Observer News Service. She has covered four Indian elections, most recently, in 2009, providing written and television political analysis for Sky News.

Palgrave Macmillan approached Rani to write the first international biography of Sonia Gandhi toward the end of 2009. She spent more than three months in India collecting exclusive new information and interviews on one of the most powerful people in the world for Sonia Gandhi, foreword by Mikhail Gorbachev. Rani endorses the work of the Gorbachev Foundation, the Raisa Gorbachev Foundation and is an Ambassador for the Prince’s Trust.
