Talvin Singh

Talvin Singh (born 1970 London) is an accomplished tabla player, electronic musician, music theorist, record producer, visual practitioner and DJ. He is best known as the father of modern Asian electronica music.

Drawing inspiration from the Indian classical arts, Singh first came to prominence as a tabla percussionist in the 1980s London music scene. He travelled to India in his teens to earn pupilage from Acharya Pandit Laxman Singh, the great guru of the Punjab school of tabla. This period made an indelible mark on the young artist. Singh’s collaborations with Indian classical musicians include Ustad Sultan Khan, Rakesh Churasia, Ustad Imrat Khan, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and more recently Niladri Kumar.

In 1997 he produced the ground breaking album -Soundz of the Asian Underground. He has also collaborated with music pioneers including Bjork, Blondie,Ruichi Sakamoto, Madonna, DJ Spooky, Sun Ra, The Master Musicians of Jajouka, Jay Z, Courtney Pine and Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan.

In 1998 Singh released his debut album on island/Universal which won him both commercial and critical acclaim. OK, 1998 winning the UK’s 2 most prestigious music prizes, The South Bank Show Prize for popular music and winner of The Mercury Music Prize in 1999.

Singh has created a unique musical identity as he continues to make connections and blur boundaries between the contemporary and classical forms and structures in music. He has worked across disciplines within art practice in the past decade. He is currently building an archive of his unpublished works which will be released in early 2012 on VAVA Music.
