Literature in Translation: Indian Languages (Norwich)
Exploring the processes and challenges of translating from Indian languages with acclaimed translator Arunava Sinha.
For many years, UK readers have been treated to shelves and shelves of fine Indian literature. Typically, though, this has all been work originally written in English. Think of Salman Rushdie, Amit Chaudhuri, Arundhati Roy, Anita Desai to name a few. But there’s also a large and growing world of writing in other Indian languages – so why don’t UK readers have access to it? Despite the great interest by publishers in Indian writing, very little is translated into English. Of course, the role of translators in bridging this gap is vital; not only are they the people who produce the English texts but they are also guides to the wealth of literature that is available, and might work well in English. Acclaimed translator Arunava Sinha, who joins us specially from India, will be in conversation with writer and translator Lakshmi Holmström and Director of BCLT Valerie Henitiuk.
This event is in partnership with the British Centre for Literary Translation and Writers’ Centre Norwich, and takes place in the Arts Block, Room A01.03. It will be followed by a drinks reception.
